John Petts heads the Insurance and Health Law division in TressCox Lawyer’s Melbourne office. A significant part of John’s practice is in professional indemnity and general liability claims. John has acted almost exclusively for insurers for many years and his experience includes defence of professional indemnity claims against a wide range of professionals including hospitals and medical practitioners, valuers, insurance brokers, engineers, architects, real estate agents and building surveyors.
John has defended claims against medical practitioners and hospitals, including brain damage catastrophic injury, and he has assisted in numerous disciplinary proceedings and coronial inquests. John has also managed claims in all classes of general insurance including matters relating to public and products liability, property, ISR, fidelity, fraud, construction risks and arson. He has extensive experience in providing advice to insurers on indemnity and policy wording, advising on legislative changes.
John works closely with his clients developing strategies for claims handling, alternative dispute resolution, and litigation. . He has endeavored to be accessible for clients’ queries at all times and has regularly arranged and presented workshops, seminars and training sessions to clients and their markets.
John Petts has been selected for inclusion by his peers in the 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 edition of Best Lawyers®: Australia for Health & Aged Care and in 2013 for Medical Negligence. In 2011 he was also selected for Lawyer of the Year in Health & Aged Care - Melbourne.
