On 28 July 2009, after 16 months of debate and consultation, the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission (‘NHHRC’) released its Final Report for A Healthier Future for All Australians, which follows up on two earlier reports released in April and December 2008.

Coroners Act 2008 (Vic) – For Whom the Bell Tolls (Newsletter Article)

The Coroners Act 2008 (Vic) (Act), which came into effect on 1 November 2009, establishes a new modern coronial system for all Victorians. The provisions in the new Act are drawn from the recommendations of the 2006 Victorian Law Reform Commission report which suggested areas were the 1985 Act should be amended and modernised to meet the requirements of the community.

Health Insurance Amendment (Compliance) Bill 2009 (Newsletter Article)

In the 2008-2009 Federal Budget the Australian Government announced its plan to refine and enhance the MBS audit process undertaken by Medicare Australia (Medicare), namely the Increased MBS Compliance Audits (the Initiative). 

Recent changes to Queensland law affecting medical practitioners - Reportable conduct: new obligations on medical practitioners (Newsletter Article)

The Medical Practitioners Registration Act 2001 (Act) has been amended by the Health and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2009 which was passed by the Queensland Parliament on Thursday 29 October 2009.
The amendments place new obligations on a medical practitioner to report conduct by another medical practitioner which can be reasonably considered to be Misconduct.
